Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Reed Point, MT.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Reed Point which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug and alcohol free life you want.
