Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Programs - Sweet Grass, MT.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Sweet Grass that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
