Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Wisdom, MT.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who plans to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Wisdom which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug-free life you want.
