Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Wise River, MT.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Wise River which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug-free life you want.
