Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - Zortman, MT.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who intends to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Zortman that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
