American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need recovery services for substance abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are more prone to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Roughly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native addiction treatment admissions arrive to rehab as criminal justice clients, which means they have most likely agreed to a court ordered diversion program to go to rehab instead of jail times for their charges. So therefore, there is a definite need for different types of treatment programs to provide services for all of the very unique requirements of this client demographic, including addiction rehabilitation services in native languages.
One of the problems that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Bostic face is access to effective treatment facilities, especially those who reside in secluded regions. Facilities offering drug and alcohol rehabilitation services in rural regions may not be set up to provide support aimed at meeting the needs and demands of this unique group of people including substance abuse treatment services in their native language. American Indian and Alaska Native individuals can work with stakeholders and elders involved in mental health services for their tribe or region to determine which services are available to them and through which facilities, and which will best suit their needs. There have been numerous grants offered in recent years to cover these types of treatment services for American and Alaska Native clients, which have very effective treatment programs which offer evidence based treatment that also incorporates culturally sensitive rehab services including those in their language which are provided by bi-lingual staff members.
