American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to be in need to recovery services for drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. Almost 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native addiction treatment admissions show up to treatment as criminal justice clients, meaning they have very likely accepted a court ordered diversion program to receive treatment in lieu of jail time.
