American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need recovery services for substance abuse and addiction. Conversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more prone to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Roughly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native substance abuse treatment admissions show up to treatment as criminal justice clients, which means they have most likely accepted a court ordered diversion program to receive rehab in lieu of jail times for their charges. So as one can see, there is definitely a need for different types of treatment programs to cover all of the various requirements of this client demographic, including addiction rehabilitation programs in native languages.
One of the challenges that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Catawba face is access to effective treatment facilities, especially those who reside in rural regions. Facilities providing substance abuse rehabilitation services in rural regions often are not able to offer strategic planning designed to meet the needs and demands of this special group of people including substance abuse rehabilitation services in their native language. American Indian and Alaska Native people can work with elders and stakeholders working in mental health services for their region or tribe to find out which services are an option for them through which rehab facilities, and which ones will best suit their needs. There have been numerous grants offered in recent years to cover these types of services for American and Alaska Native clients, which have very effectively established recovery programs which offer evidence based treatment that also integrates culturally sensitive rehab services delivered in their language which are provided by bi-lingual treatment staff, medical staff, etc.
