The military currently uses a military insurance known as Tricare to help veterans, active military members and their families obtain health benefits. There is Tricare Prime, Tricare Standard, and Tricare Extra. Tricare Standard provides insurance benefits for retirees of the military who are 60 or older and their eligible family members. With Tricare Standard they go to any civilian health care provider that is payable under Tricare, but also pay yearly deductible and coinsurance, in addition to any out-of-pocket expenses. Tricare Extra is an option available to Tricare Standard beneficiaries which provides access to non-military health care providers within their provider network, with a reduced coinsurance amount. Tricare Prime is available to all active-duty members, retirees, and all qualified family members, and with this they can choose a primary care physician and obtain referrals to health care services that provide specialty care.
Through TRICARE, members of the military can obtain drug and alcohol treatment services in Elizabeth City. This includes individual and group therapy including family therapy, detoxification, and other treatment services. They will require pre-authorization for services and there are likely to be some restrictions. Military insurance covers both outpatient and inpatient, but stays for detoxification are restricted to 7 days. Partial hospitalization or impatient treatment following detoxification will only be authorized if it is a Tricare approved treatment center, and there are time restrictions as to how long military insurance carriers will be permitted to remain in treatment. A 3-week inpatient stay per benefit period is usually accepted. In additional to this, there are 15 family therapy sessions and 60 group therapy sessions covered per benefit period, which occur on an outpatient basis. Family therapy is covered one after the active military member has completed other primary treatment services such as outpatient or inpatient treatment.
