American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need recovery services for drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are more prone to seek treatment on their own will more than other racial/ethnic groups. Roughly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native addiction treatment admissions show up to rehab as criminal justice clients, which means they have most likely agreed to a court ordered diversion program to receive rehab instead of jail times for their charges. So as you can see, there is a definite need for different types of treatment programs to cover all of the very unique needs of this client demographic, including substance abuse treatment services in native languages.
One of the challenges that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Harris face is access to comprehensive and effective services, particularly those who reside in secluded areas. There have been numerous grants offered in recent years to cover these types of treatment services for American and Alaska Native clients, that have very effective programs which provide evidence based treatment that also incorporates culturally sensitive treatment services including those in their language which are provided by bi-lingual treatment staff, medical staff, etc.
