American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need treatment for substance abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are more likely to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Roughly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native drug and alcohol treatment admissions show up to treatment as criminal justice clients, meaning they have most likely accepted a court ordered diversion program to go to treatment instead of jail times for their charges. So as one can see, there is definitely a need for different types of treatment programs to cover all of the various needs of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including addiction rehabilitation services in native languages.
One of the challenges that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Wanchese face is access to comprehensive treatment facilities, particularly those who live in secluded areas. Programs providing addiction rehab services in rural areas commonly are not capable of offering support designed to meet the needs and demands of this unique group of people including addiction treatment services in their language. American Indian and Alaska Native people can work with stakeholders and elders involved in mental health services for their region or tribe to determine which treatment services are available to them and through which treatment facilities, and which will best suit their needs. There have been numerous grants sanctioned in recent years to help pay for these types of treatment services for American and Alaska Native clients, that have very effectively established programs which provide evidence based treatment that also incorporates culturally sensitive recovery services delivered in their language which are performed by bi-lingual treatment staff, medical staff, etc.
