Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - Pender, NE.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, an individual who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Pender which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
