Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Plattsmouth, NE.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who plans to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Plattsmouth that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
