Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - Seneca, NE.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Seneca that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
