Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Sprague, NE.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, an individual who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Sprague which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
