One of the out-patient rehab options for clients in St. Paul battling with opioid dependence and addiction is called opioid maintenance therapy. Some facilities and doctors are certified to dispense certain meds to opioid dependent individuals, many of which are opioids also and are habit forming. In low doses however, the client does not feel high and also does not have intense cravings and isn't experiencing opioid withdrawal. Methadone is the first med tried for this purpose, but there are a few more options currently to choose from.
Methadone is an opiate and can be taken at an out-patient medical center certified to dispense the med, that is taken on a daily basis as a pill or liquid. The cost of the med is about $150 monthly. Buprenorphine is also an opioid based drug, and is a pill often taken one day on, one day off. But different from Methadone which can only be dispensed in well-regulated clinics, Buprenorphine can be and is prescribed and administered in doctor's offices. The price monthly of buprenorphine is around just under $300 a month for the generic version of the drug. There is also a type of buprenorphine that contains the ingredient naloxone, which is a drug that blocks the effects of opioids. Someone consuming this version of the drug, AKA Suboxone, would find it more difficult to get high from opioids if they relapsed while taking the drug. It too is taken every day, and is priced approximately $450 /month. Naltrexone is another med used in opioid maintenance therapy, but unlike the other drugs aforementioned it is an opiate blocker and is not an opiate. There is an option to take this drug as a monthly injection, and that is called Vivitrol. As an opioid blocker, it prevents someone from getting high from opioids, and in turn lowers the risk associated with relapse. This daily injection costs anywhere from $1000 to $1200 per month.
