Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Tekamah, NE.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who intends to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Tekamah which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
