Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - Tryon, NE.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Tryon that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug and alcohol free life you want.
