Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - Ashland, NH.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Ashland that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
