Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Deerfield, NH.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who intends to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Deerfield that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the sober life you want.
