Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Greenland, NH.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Greenland which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
