Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Centers - Newfields, NH.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who plans to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Newfields which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
