Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Facilities - Rollinsford, NH.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Rollinsford which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
