Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - Winchester, NH.

Vivitrol is a drug used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, an individual who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Winchester that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you live the drug and alcohol free life you want.
