American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need recovery services for drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. Conversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are more prone to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Roughly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native substance abuse treatment admissions show up to treatment as criminal justice clients, which means they have most likely accepted a court ordered diversion program to go to rehab in lieu of jail times for their charges. So as you can see, there is definitely a need for different types of treatment programs to provide services for all of the very unique needs of this client demographic, including substance abuse treatment programs in native languages.
One of the challenges that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Brookside face is access to comprehensive treatment facilities, especially those who live in rural locations. Programs providing drug and alcohol treatment services in rural regions commonly are not capable of offering support designed to meet the needs and demands of this special demographic including addiction rehabilitation services in their native language. American Indian and Alaska Native individuals can work with elders and stakeholders involved in mental health services for their tribe or region to find out which types of treatment services are an option for them through which facilities, and which ones will best suit their needs. There have been numerous grants sanctioned in recent years to cover these types of treatment services for American and Alaska Native clients, which have very effectively established treatment programs which provide evidence based treatment that also integrates culturally sensitive recovery services delivered in their language which are provided by bi-lingual treatment staff, medical staff, etc.
