Buprenorphine is used in what is known as medication assisted treatment (MAT) for people in Counselor who are opiate dependent to prescription pain killers or heroin. Unlike Methadone which is also used in medication assisted treatment but is usually only distributed in strictly controlled clinics, Buprenorphine can be prescribed and dispensed in doctor's offices which provides more people with access to this type of opiate treatment.
When Buprenorphine is utilized in recovery it can help individuals who are going through the intense cravings and withdrawal symptoms brought on by opiate withdrawal. Buprenorphine works to control and minimize these withdrawal symptoms so that the individual can stay off drugs as well as not carry out typical drug seeking behaviors. When the medication assisted treatment concept was first realized and put into action, it wasn't meant to be a primary form of treatment but rather only part of a multi-faceted treatment plan that would ideally involve actual rehabilitation for opioid dependency and addiction recovery. Buprenorphine use would only be one piece of a larger comprehensive treatment plan.
