Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Facilities - Fairacres, NM.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a client who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Fairacres which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
