Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Fruitland, NM.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who plans to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Fruitland which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
