Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Hernandez, NM.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a client who intends to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Hernandez which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
