American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need recovery services for substance abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more likely to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Roughly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native addiction treatment admissions arrive to rehab as criminal justice clients, which means they have most likely accepted a court ordered diversion program to receive rehab instead of jail time. So as one can see, there is an absolute need for a variety of service types to cover all of the various requirements of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including addiction treatment programs in native languages.
One of the challenges that American Indian and Alaska Natives in New Laguna face is access to comprehensive treatment facilities, especially those who live in rural areas. Facilities providing addiction rehabilitation services in rural regions may not be capable of offering support designed to meet the needs of this distinctive group of people including substance abuse rehabilitation services in their native language. American Indian and Alaska Native clients can work with elders and stakeholders involved in mental health services for their region or tribe to figure out which services are an option for them through which rehab facilities, and which ones will best suit their needs. There have been many grants sanctioned in recent years to cover these types of rehab services for American and Alaska Native clients, which have very effectively established recovery programs which provide evidence based treatment that also incorporates culturally sensitive rehab services delivered in their language which are provided by bi-lingual treatment staff, medical staff, etc.
