American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to require treatment for drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more likely to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Roughly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native drug and alcohol treatment admissions arrive to treatment as criminal justice clients, meaning they have most likely accepted a diversion option to go to rehab instead of jail time. So as one can see, there is definitely a need for a variety of service types to cover all of the various needs of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including addiction treatment programs in native languages.
One of the challenges that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Rogers face is access to comprehensive and effective services, especially those who reside in secluded regions. Facilities providing substance abuse treatment services in rural areas commonly are not able to offer support intended for the needs and demands of this distinctive demographic including addiction treatment services in their native language. American Indian and Alaska Native clients can work with stakeholders and elders involved in mental health services for their tribe or region to figure out which treatment services are an option for them and through which treatment facilities, and which ones will work best for their particular situation. There have been numerous grants sanctioned in recent years to cover these types of treatment services for American and Alaska Native clients, that have very effective recovery programs which offer evidence based treatment that also integrates culturally sensitive rehab services delivered in their language which are provided by bi-lingual treatment staff, medical staff, etc.
