Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Santa Rosa, NM.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Santa Rosa that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
