Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Centers - Sunspot, NM.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who intends to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Sunspot which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the sober life you want.
