Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Golconda, NV.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Golconda which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the sober life you want.
