Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Imlay, NV.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Imlay which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
