Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Jarbidge, NV.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Jarbidge which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
