Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - Ruby Valley, NV.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes people who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Ruby Valley that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug-free life you want.
