Medicare is a federal health insurance program which helps pay for health benefits for individuals living in the U.S. who are either disabled or 65 years of age or older. Medicare comes in different "Parts", with Parts A-D covering different forms of care.

Part A (Insurance for Hospital Stays) - Medicare Part A covers inpatient substance rehabilitation, and up to 60 days in rehab without a co-pay but policy holders will have to pay a deductible. Medicare only pays for a total of 190 days of inpatient care, this applies to the individual's lifetime.

Part B (Medical Insurance) ? Medicare Part B covers up to 80% of the fees associated with outpatient substance abuse rehab. This includes outpatient care, therapy/counseling, treatment for co-occurring disorders such as depression or anxiety and drugs administered by clinics. It also pays for professional interventions.

Part C (Medicare-approved Private Insurance) Medicare Part D is an alternative for individuals who want additional health insurance apart from what the other parts of Medicare have to offer. Individuals who have Part C can have more options available to them, but out-of-pocket costs and coverage is different and may be more expensive.

Part D (Prescription Insurance) Medicare Part D pays for substance abuse related medications. Including medications needed for withdrawal symptoms during detoxification and those used for maintenance therapy such as methadone or buprenorphine.
