American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to require recovery services for drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are more prone to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Roughly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native drug and alcohol treatment admissions show up to rehab as criminal justice clients, which means they have very likely agreed to a court ordered diversion program to go to treatment instead of jail time. So as one can see, there is definitely a need for different types of treatment programs to cover all of the various requirements of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including addiction treatment programs in native languages.
One of the barriers that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Clinton face is access to comprehensive and effective rehab programs, particularly those who live in rural locations.
