American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to be in need to rehabilitation for drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more likely to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Roughly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native drug and alcohol treatment admissions arrive to treatment as criminal justice clients, which means they have very likely accepted a court ordered diversion program to receive rehab instead of jail times for their charges. So therefore, there is a definite need for a variety of service types to cover all of the very unique needs of this client demographic, including addiction treatment services in native languages.
One of the challenges that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Ithaca face is access to effective services, particularly those who reside in rural areas. Facilities providing substance abuse treatment services in rural regions may not be able to offer strategic planning aimed at meeting the needs of this unique group of people including substance abuse rehabilitation services in their language. American Indian and Alaska Native individuals can consult with elders and stakeholders working in mental health services for their region or tribe to figure out which treatment services are available to them and through which treatment facilities, and which will work best for their particular situation. There have been numerous grants offered in recent years to cover these types of rehab services for American and Alaska Native clients, that have very effectively established programs which provide evidence based treatment that also incorporates culturally sensitive recovery services including those in their language which are performed by bi-lingual staff members.
