The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department responsible for efforts to promote the mental health of the U.S.. One of its obligations is the supervision of opioid rehab programs, which are centers who offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are in the midst of opioid dependency and addiction. Medicine given are drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs that stop withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid dependent clients. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment centers in Lycoming are programs which are legally permitted to give out the drugs used in MAT as long as they maintain their certification and continue to meet certain requirements. One of these requirements is that MAT individuals must also get auxiliary services in addition to medicine such as psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid rehab program can get their basic certification while they endeavor to get their full accreditation, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehabilitation facilities accredited by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. In addition, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA office. Once an opioid treatment center is certified, they need to get re-certified every year or every 3 years contingent upon the kind of accreditation it has been given.
