The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department in charge of efforts to promote the mental health of the U.S.. One of its duties is the oversight of opioid rehab facilities, which are centers that provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are experiencing opioid dependency and addiction. Drug given are drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs which help withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid addicted individuals. One of these requirements is that MAT clients must also get ancillary services aside from medicine like counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid rehabilitation program can receive basic approval documentation while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid treatment facilities authorized by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. In addition, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA branch. Once an opioid rehab program is certified, it must be re-certified each year or every three years depending on the kind of accreditation that was given.
