American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need recovery services for substance abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more likely to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Roughly 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native substance abuse treatment admissions show up to treatment as criminal justice clients, meaning they have most likely agreed to a diversion option to go to treatment in lieu of jail times for their charges. So as one can see, there is a definite need for different types of treatment programs to cover all of the various needs of this client demographic, including addiction rehabilitation services in native languages.
One of the challenges that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Wayland face is access to comprehensive and effective rehab programs, particularly those who live in secluded regions. Facilities offering substance abuse rehab services in rural regions commonly are not capable of offering strategic planning aimed at meeting the needs of this special group of people including addiction rehabilitation services in their language.
