The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency in charge of efforts to promote the mental health of the United States. One of its obligations is the supervision of opioid treatment facilities, which are programs that provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are experiencing opioid addiction and dependency. Drug administered are drugs like buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs which help curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid addicted individuals. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment programs in West Harrison are programs that are legally permitted to give out the medications used in MAT being they maintain their certification and always maintain the necessary requirements. One of these requirements is that MAT clients must also get auxiliary services in addition to medication such as psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid rehab center can get their basic approval documentation while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid treatment programs accredited by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. Likewise, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA branch. Once an opioid rehabilitation facility is approved to operate, it must be re-certified each year or every three years contingent upon the kind of certification it has been granted.
