One of the outpatient rehab alternatives for clients in Alpha battling with opioid abuse and addiction is called opioid maintenance therapy. Some clinics and doctors are authorized to dispense certain meds to opioid dependent clients, many that are opioid-based themselves and are habit forming. In low amounts however, the client doesn't experience being high and also doesn't experience severe cravings and isn't in opioid withdrawal. Methadone is the first drug administered for this purpose, but there are a few more options currently to select from.
Methadone is an opioid and can be taken at an out-patient clinic certified to administer the drug, that is taken daily in liquid or pill form. The cost of the drug is around $150 a month. Buprenorphine is also an opiate based med, and is a pill often taken one day on, one day off. But different from Methadone that can only be given in highly well-regulated clinics, Buprenorphine can be prescribed and dispensed in doctor's offices. The monthly cost of buprenorphine is approximately $300 per month for the generic version of the drug. There is also a type of buprenorphine that contains naloxone, which is a drug which reverses the effects of opiates. Someone consuming this formulation, also known as Suboxone, would find it more difficult to get high from opioids if they relapsed while taking the drug. It is also taken every day, and is priced approximately $450 a month. Naltrexone is another drug taken in opioid maintenance therapy, but unlike the other drugs mentioned it is an opiate blocker and is not an opioid. A person has the choice to take this drug as a monthly shot, and that is called Vivitrol. As an opioid blocker, the drug prevents someone from getting high from opioids, and therefore lowers the risk associated with relapse. This daily injection costs in the range of $1000 to $1200 a month.
