Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Centers - Alvada, OH.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Alvada which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the sober life you want.
