One of the outpatient treatment options for people in Dayton struggling with opioid dependence and addiction is opioid maintenance therapy. Some facilities and doctors are certified to administer certain medications to opioid dependent individuals, many of which are opioid-based also and are addictive. In low doses however, the client does not feel high but also doesn't have intense cravings and isn't experiencing opioid withdrawal. Methadone is the first medication used for this reason, but there are a few more options currently to select from.
Methadone is an opiate and is meant to be taken at an out-patient medical center licensed to administer the med, which is taken on a daily basis in liquid or pill form. The price of the med is approximately one hundred and fifty dolloars a month. Buprenorphine is also an opiate based drug, and is in pill form often taken every other day. But different from Methadone that can only be given in well-regulated clinics, Buprenorphine can be prescribed and dispensed in doctor's offices. The price monthly of buprenorphine is about three hundred dollars /month for the generic of the med. There is also a version of buprenorphine that contains naloxone, that is a med which blocks the effects of opioids. An individual taking this formulation, AKA Suboxone, would find it harder to feel high from opioids if they relapsed while taking the drug. It is also taken daily, and costs around $450 monthly. Naltrexone is another drug used in opioid maintenance therapy, but unlike the other drugs mentioned it's an opiate blocker and is not an opioid. There is an option to take this drug as a monthly shot, which is called Vivitrol. As an opioid blocker, it prevents someone from getting high from opioids, and in turn lowers the risk associated with relapse. This daily injection costs in the range of $1000 to $1200 monthly.
