Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Dayton, OH.

Vivitrol is a medication used to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Dayton that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
