Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Programs - East Palestine, OH.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a treatment program in East Palestine that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the sober life you want.
