The military currently uses a military insurance called Tricare to help veterans, active military members and their families receive health benefits. There is Tricare Prime, Tricare Standard, and Tricare Extra. Tricare Standard offers insurance benefits for retirees of the military who are 60 or older and their qualified family members. With Tricare Standard they have access to any civilian health care provider that is payable under Tricare, but also pay yearly deductible and coinsurance, as well as any out-of-pocket expenses. Tricare Extra is available for Tricare Standard beneficiaries which allows access to non-military health care providers within their provider network, with a discounted coinsurance amount. Tricare Prime is offered to all active-duty members, retirees, and all eligible family members, and with this they can choose a primary doctor and get referrals to health care services that provide specialty care.

By way of TRICARE, military members can obtain substance abuse treatment services in Harbor View. This includes individual and group therapy including family therapy, detoxification, and other substance abuse recovery services. They will need pre-authorization for services and there are likely to be some restrictions. Military insurance covers both inpatient and outpatient, but stays for detoxification are limited to 7 days. Partial hospitalization or impatient treatment following detox will only be authorized if it is an approved facility, and there are time restrictions as to how long military members will be allowed to stay in treatment. A 3-week inpatient stay per benefit period is usually permitted. In additional to this, there are 15 family therapy sessions and 60 group therapy sessions covered per benefit period, which take place on an outpatient basis. Family therapy is covered one after the active military member has finished other rehabilitation services such as outpatient or inpatient treatment.
